Learning to read is hard! Did you know that learning to read is not a natural process? Approximately 50-60% of children will need explicit, systematic instruction to read proficiently. With the proper assessment and support, 95% of people can learn to read well, even with challenges like dyslexia.
There are research-based, reliable solutions to reading difficulties. All children are different, but the process of learning to read is amazingly similar for everyone. By identifying where your child is and building on their strengths, they can grow their skills to be a proficient reader!
Structured Literacy
Structured Literacy is an instructional model that emphasizes a clear scope and sequence and explicit teaching of skills. Practice and review are built in consistently and new skills are added in a clear, systematic way. Instruction is engaging and multi-sensory. It includes foundational skills (i.e. decoding and spelling), as well as higher-level skills (i.e. comprehension, critical thinking, self-monitoring). This method is quick-paced and built on the philosophy that the more they DO, the more they LEARN.
Structured Literacy emphasizes the five pillars of reading instruction: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. From alphabet skills to advanced academic vocabulary and decoding of multi-syllabic words, all readers can benefit from work in these areas. There is a strong research base that shows Structured Literacy is beneficial for all, whether your child is a struggling, average, or advanced reader.
